Twisted pair cables and optical cables are two common network transmission media, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Here is their comparison:

 

Bandwidth and transmission distance: The bandwidth of optical cables is much larger than that of twisted pair cables, which can support higher data transmission rates and longer transmission distances. Fiber optic cables are suitable for long-distance transmission and high-speed data transmission, such as remote video surveillance, network video transmission, etc. The bandwidth and transmission distance of twisted pair cables are relatively low, usually not exceeding 100 meters.

 

Anti interference: Fiber optic cables use optical signals for transmission, and the probability of interference is very small, so fiber optic cables have better anti-interference properties compared to twisted pair cables. Although twisted pair cables can reduce electromagnetic interference by twisting, their performance will be affected in strong interference environments

 

Cost: The installation and maintenance cost of twisted pair cables is relatively low, while unshielded twisted pair (UTP) is widely used for Ethernet installation due to its low price. In contrast, the cost of fiber optic cables is relatively high, and installation and maintenance are also relatively difficult, requiring special tools and techniques

 

Flexibility and ease of use: Twisted pair cables are easy to install and use, especially for short distance data and voice transmission. Although optical cables have better transmission performance than twisted pair cables, they require higher installation and maintenance requirements and are not as flexible and easy to use as twisted pair cables.
