Advantages of Fiber Patch Cords

Bandwidth Rate

The best way to transfer a high amount of data with speed is only possible with fiber patch cords. A terabyte of data can be transferred within seconds through these fiber cables. High bandwidth rates allow increasing the efficiency of data transfer at a higher level.

01

Communication Speed

Speedy performance, speedy operation and speedy communication really matter for the speedy growth of businesses. By using Optical Fiber Cords, we can easily speed up communication.

02

Attenuation Absence

Attenuation of the signal is a critical factor for most networks. It is practically absent in Fiber Patch Cords. Safely, securely and complete information deliverability is only possible with high-quality Fiber Patch Cords.

03

Security Factor

One of the most important features of Fiber Patch Cords is that they provide excellent security. Compromising with security is also not a great idea especially if the shared information is confidential.

04

Transferred Data Accuracy

Technology is all about the accuracy of data. Engineers, scientists and researchers have heavily relied on the information shared with them. So even a minor data mistake can lead to a serious issue. That's why the accuracy of transferred data is essential.

Types of Fiber Patch Cords

The mode of fiber patch cables indicates how light beams travel within the fiber. There are two fiber cable modes: single mode and multimode.

Single mode fiber patch lead only allows one mode of light to pass along its length with a very thin diameter of 8-10 microns, thus it can carry signals at much higher speeds with lower attenuation. Single mode fiber has two varieties: OS1 and OS2, which are different in construction and application. In Comparison Between OS1 and OS2 SMF Cables, the differences between OS1 and OS2 are illustrated. In general, OS1 and OS2 are both applicable for long-haul transmission but OS2 is more suitable for long-haul transmission by offering better performance with fewer losses.

The core of the multimode fiber patch cord is bigger, typically 50 or 62.5 microns, which enables multiple light modes to be transmitted. It comes in five varieties supporting different transmission rates or distances: 62.5-micron OM1, 50-micron OM2, 50-micron OM3, 50-micron OM4, and 50-micron OM5, which can be differentiated by standard jacket colors. Since multiple light paths travel down the cable, the distance which multimode fiber jumpers can reach is usually short. For short-distance transmission within a building or campus, multimode fiber patch cords are the best-suited type. You can get more information about multimode patch cables in Multimode Fiber Types: OM1 vs OM2 vs OM3 vs OM4 vs OM5.

Construction of a Fiber Patch Cable

A fiber patch cable is assembled of the following elements:

Primary and secondary coating

Strengthens the fiber and makes it suitable for installation.

Kevlar

The fiber is protected against tensile stress by the Kevlar/aramid around the secondary coating.

The outer jacket (also called jacket)

Strengthens the construction and protects the cable against external influences.

Fiber Patch Cords Outer Jacket Color Code

Due to the different types of fibers and application environments of fiber patch cords, their outer jackets are usually distinguished by specific colors. In EIA/TIA-598, the outer jacket color of different optical fibers for non military applications is defined. Single mode fibers use yellow outer jacket, while multimode optical fibers use orange, aqua, violet, lime green to help quickly identify different types of multimode fibers.

In addition to color differentiation, manufacturers will print information on fiber optic jumpers, usually including fiber type and specifications. Therefore, in practical applications, it is best to combine color and label information to determine the fiber optic type.

Size Of Fiber Patch Cords

Our fiber optic patch cords are factory terminated, inspected and tested to meet industry standards. They are available in either riser or plenum flame rating, and have a 2.0mm or 3.0mm thick color-coded jacket.
Standard patch cords are available in simple or duplex style, have matching connectors at each end and are available in 1, 2, 3, 5, and 10 meter lengths. They feature low connector insertion loss to ensure proper operation upon installation. Duplex cable is conveniently labeled with an A or B to identify the connector at each end.
Specialty and custom patch cords are also available with different connectors at each end, or connectorless when used to terminate bulk fiber cables via mechanical or fusion splicing.

Avoid End Face Contamination
The tip of the fiber connector, where the fiber optic glass actually protrudes is the most common area for damage to occur. Leave the protective caps on until you are ready to plug it into the equipment. Prior to plugging it in, inspect the end face, clean and repeat if necessary!

Don'T Bend or Kink Fiber Cables
The fiber optic glass underneath the jacket performs best when it is running straight. In reality, however, the cables need to bend in many different directions in order to go from source to destination. There is a term called “bend radius” and each brand of fiber optic cables will have a different measurement to follow.

Don'T Pull Too Hard on The Cable
If the cable is too short, don't try to stretch it! It may seem pretty obvious, but pulling will probably lead to a break in the fiber optic cable or connector.

Don't Mix and Match Core Sizes
Most fiber optic cables have color coded jackets to make it easy to avoid this problem. To understand more about fiber core sizes, watch this video.

Do not pinch the fiber
Pinching the fiber optic cable can squeeze the glass and ruin performance. Don't use zip-ties, use Velcro!

FAQ

Q: Who is the largest manufacturer of fiber optic cable?

A: Xianquan Technology in the fiber optic cable industry, renowned for its innovative approach to manufacturing and sustainable solutions.the mainly products included fiber optical onu, fiber optical patch cord, fiber optical cable, fiber optical pigtail, fiber optical tool kits and fiber optical fast connector, etc.

Q: What is the most common patch cable?

A: Here are the most common kinds of patch leads.
CAT5/CAT5e Ethernet cables. These cables are probably the most common type of patch cables and the ones you are most likely to come across in everyday life. ...
Crossover cable. ...
Fibre optic patch cables. ...
TRS patch cables. ...
Other patch cables.

Q: How thick is a fiber patch cord?

A: The cable diameter of single mode fiber optic patch cord are 0.9mm, 2.0mm , 3.0mm. According to cable outer sheath material, it can be divided into ordinary type, ordinary flame retardant type(PVC), low smoke halogen free type (LZSH), low smoke halogen free flame retardant type, etc.

Q: What is the length of fiber patch cords?

A: Standard patch cords are available in simple or duplex style, have matching connectors at each end and are available in 1, 2, 3, 5, and 10 meter lengths. They feature low connector insertion loss to ensure proper operation upon installation.

Q: What is the purpose of a patch cord?

A: The main purpose of a patch cord is to provide a convenient and flexible way to connect fiber optic devices or components. It allows for quick and easy interconnection between network equipment, such as switches, routers, servers, and fiber optic transceivers. Patch cords are commonly used in data centers, telecommunications networks, and other applications where fiber optic connectivity is required.

Q: How do you attach a fiber patch cord?

A: Attaching a fiber patch cord involves connecting the connectors on both ends of the patch cord to the corresponding ports on network devices or components. The connectors are designed to be inserted into fiber optic ports until they click into place, ensuring a secure and reliable connection. It is important to handle fiber patch cords carefully, avoiding excessive bending or twisting, to prevent damage to the fibers or connectors.
