The information network mainly uses optical fiber as the transmission medium, but the current calculation and analysis must be based on electrical signals, and the SFP optical transceiver is the core device for realizing photoelectric conversion.

SFP modules consist of: Laser: Including transmitter TOSA and receiver ROSA ,circuit board IC, and the external parts include: shell, base, PCBA, pull ring, clasp, unlocking piece, rubber plug.
In addition, for the convenience of identification, the color of the ring is generally used to identify the module's parameter types. For example, the black pull ring is multimode, the wavelength is 850 nm; the blue is the module with the wavelength of 1310 nm; the yellow is the module with the wavelength of 1550 nm; the purple is the module with the wavelength of 1490 nm.
Interface indicators of the SFP module
1. Output optical power refers to the output optical power of the light source at the transmitting end of the module.
2. Received optical power refers to the received optical power at the receiving end of the module.
3. Receive sensitivity refers to the minimum received optical power of SFP module at a certain rate and bit error rate. Under normal conditions, the higher the rate, the worse the receiving sensitivity.The larger the minimum received optical power, the higher the requirement for the receiving device of the optical module.
4. Saturated optical power, also known as light saturation, refers to the maximum input optical power at a certain transmission rate while maintaining a certain bit error rate (10-10~10-12).
Installation Requirements of SFP

SFP, SFP +, SFP28, QSFP, and QSFP28, are hot-pluggable modules. Their installation can follow the following instructions.
Keep the ESD wrist strap on your wrist all the time, or keep the grounding equipment connected all the time. In addition, if there is a metal surface on your chassis, it is also OK.
When the optical module is not inserted, do not remove the dust cover in the port.
TX/RX ports should be clearly marked on different cables, it will help you to identify different ports, which is convenient for the subsequent management and other workers to repair or upgrade.
Slide the transceiver module to the port carefully.
After cleaning the end-face of the optical fiber, you can remove the dust cover and insert the network interface cable.
Confirm the transceiver module inserted into the port securely.
After all the operations, the port status LED should be green, which means you have established an optical fiber link. If the port status LED is still off, ensure that the connected device is powered on before troubleshooting.
How to Select an SFP Transceiver




Deploying SFP links on your network goes far beyond inserting a single fiber transceiver into the Ethernet switch port. To optimize network performance, you'll need to specify the right single-mode fiber transceiver type for your industrial switch application. Although there are many types of SFP modules on the market, the list can be narrowed down to five form factors: SFP, SFP+, SFP28, QSFP+, and QSFP28.
Operating Temperature
In a production environment, you'll need a rugged transceiver with an industrial-grade temperature range of -40 to 185°F (-40 to 85°C), not a commercial-grade one with a more limited range of 32 to 158°F (0 to 70°C). If not, the transceiver may fail in extreme heat or cold, taking the signal and network connection with it.
Cable Types
Match the transceiver to the two-mode fiber or cable you are planning to use, whether the fiber, copper cable, multimode fiber (MMF) or single, multi-mode fiber (SMF).
Port Speed
This should be obvious but bears repeating. Always match the transmission speed of the transceiver to the port-supported speed. Transceiver speeds range from 100 Mbps (SFP) all the way to 112 Gbps (QSFP28).
Link Distance
Choose a transceiver that supports the distance between the switch and the interface of the device you want the switch to connect.
Compatibility
Some manufacturers participate in “vendor lock-in” practices that intentionally prevent third-party SFP transceiver modules from working in their devices. Multi-Source Agreement (MSA) standards have helped to create an open market for SFP transceiver modules.
